Symposium AI and Biotechnology

On November 5, 2026, the Netherlands Commission on Genetic Modification (COGEM) hosts an international symposium on the application of Artificial Intelligence in Biotechnology.  

The convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) with biotechnology transforms the landscape in the life sciences. The use of large language models (LLMs) enables researchers to analyze vast amounts of complex data, identify patterns and correlations, and predict the impact of specific changes, thereby accelerating innovation. And generative AI is transforming biology from a largely descriptive field into a design-based technology by creating new proteins and genetic sequences with specific properties.

This symposium will address scientific and technological developments, including large language models, AI applications for protein sequencing and proteomics, the acceleration of plant breeding, and generative AI. In addition to technological developments, the symposium will also address the questions raised by these new possibilities regarding ethics, biosecurity, and governance. It will also explore how Europe can (continue to) play a role in this rapidly evolving field and what resources are available to support this.
